Migration Issues- NRC in Assam

Background of the issue-

1. The history of muslim in the Assam date back to 18th   century when according to the some scholars, turks , arab traders and sailors came to brahmaputra valley.


2. After the british annexed Assam as a part of the Bengal Presidency in 1826. The migrant labourers were brought in from the central India to work in the tea plantation which the local population could not manages on its own.


3. After the jute cultivation starts in Assam, both of these research behind migration of muslim farmers from the East Bengal to Assam.


4. First, in the small number but this number increased recently.


NRC in 1951-

1. NRC is a document manufactured by government which contains the name of Indian Citizens. Updation of NRC is periodic process. If requires to updated at regular interval, So as to ensure proper documentation of citizens as well as to check the possible illegal migration.


2. In Assam , updation of NRC ,could not be carried out since 1951 ,due to several political compulsions.


3. The Assam movement in 1980, the language movement and such other identity movement fought on ethnic lines.


4. After the five decades ,present government initiated the step to update NRC under the direct supervision of honorable supreme court of India.


Is this the first such register ?


No , There was on NRC across the Country in 1951, but that was based on the census of that year and this is the first time, it is being revised and only in the Assam and It is not based on the census.


Who will be considered as Indian Citizens?

Those whose names were in 1951 NRC or in any or the electoral rolls up to the midnight of march 24, 1971 and their descendants.
